Hi2BIO

Hi2BIO and the dairy industry

Hi2BIO, a pioneering project in wastewater valorization for green hydrogen production through advanced bioprocesses, has reached a significant milestone by shifting its focus towards the dairy industry. This change in strategy represents a crucial step in our commitment to expanding and diversifying the applicability of our technology across different industrial sectors.

A New Horizon: From the Fruit Industry to Dairy

The initial trials of the Hi2BIO project were successfully carried out in the fruit industry, demonstrating the capacity and effectiveness of our technology in the biological production of hydrogen. Now, with the aim of exploring and exploiting new industries, the second phase of trials and experiments have been launched to validate its efficacy in the dairy industry. This strategic shift will not only allow us to evaluate the performance of our technology in a different industrial environment, but will also bring us closer to our goal of applying our processes in several industries.

About Hi2BIO

Hi2BIO is a project focused to the valorization of industrial wastewater for the generation of green hydrogen through dual-stage biological processes. The project aims to maximize biological hydrogen production by combining dark fermentation and photofermentation, as well as to optimize and scale these processes to increase hydrogen production.

The objectives include studying the behavior of these processes in series, selecting the best bacterial inoculums, analyzing gas treatment alternatives to achieve 95% hydrogen purity, and designing a prototype for testing under simulated conditions.

Execution Period and Collaboration

The Hi2BIO project will run from July 2023 to July 2026, in collaboration with the University of Zaragoza, INGEOBRAS, and Inngen.io. This joint effort is funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU program and has been considered a Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE), key to the country’s economic future.

Hi2BIO is an example of how public-private collaboration can drive major innovation initiatives, contributing to the transformation and resilience of the Spanish economy.

With this shift towards the dairy industry, Hi2BIO continues its journey towards diversifying and optimizing its processes, reaffirming its commitment to innovation and sustainability in green hydrogen production.
