Hi2BIO and Bacteria in Green Hydrogen Production

Recently Soumya Gupta, Laura Grasa, Annabel Fernades and Jesús Salafranca, leading researchers from the University of Zaragoza and the University of Beira Interior (Portugal), have revealed advances in the production of green hydrogen from industrial effluents. This study, part of the Hi2BIO project, not only explores bacterial richness in dark fermentation bioreactors, but also sheds light on how these bacteria can transform waste into a valuable source of renewable energy.

Dark Fermentation from a Microscopic Point of View: Bacteria and Green Hydrogen

Key to this study is the detailed analysis of bacterial DNA, which has allowed researchers to identify and catalog the bacterial species present. This approach aids the understanding of the microbiology involved in green hydrogen production, as well as the optimization of these key biological processes.

Hi2BIO aims to scale up and optimize the processes of dark fermentation and photofermentation. This strategic combination seeks to maximize the production of green hydrogen of bacterial origin, overcoming technical and operational barriers for its real industrial application.
