ANAERGY is a disruptive technology funded by the EU’s SMEi Phase2 programme for the efficient treatment of water discharges in the small and medium sized agri-food industry. The solution removes 95% of the COD in the wastewater, minimising the area required and the consumption of energy and chemicals. This reduces the associated operating and maintenance costs. ANAERGY is a modular and customised technology that integrates different processes throughout the system, being fully adaptable to customer requirements.
MILESTONES
Five milestones have been established to ensure the successful development of ANAERGY. Of these five milestones, three have been fully completed and the project is progressing progressively.
These milestones range from the complete development of INGEOBRAS‘ own technology based on anaerobic digestion to the industrialisation and commercialisation of ANAERGY.
Improved design of the anaerobic digester
- 100% Completed
Standardisation of integration modules
- 100% completed
Manufacture a test bench
- 90% completed
Consistent industrial chain

Test Bench Results
The engineering team of ANAERGY has designed and manufactures a test bench that is able to be adapted according to the customer’s requirements, providing to the market a bespoke solution for treating water discharges in food industries.
The testing works in the test bench were undertaken considering two types of water:
Wineries
Fruit juice industries
To ensure the correct operation of the pilot plant and to obtain reliable results, ANAERGY’s technical team analysed daily two water samples per day for 6 months, analysing the following parameters: COD reduction, total and volatile solids, conductivity, alkalinity and nitrogen and phosphorus consumption
In addition to analysing the samples in our in-house laboratory, the entire process is monitored according to 4.0 technology so that all data is accessible in real time via internet connection.
The main results achieved for wastewater streams from wineries are:
- High increase of ORP values in water outlet due to bacteriological activity.
- Great impact on pH value (decrease) caused by the anaerobic biofilter.
- The conductivity depends on the bacteriological activity. When there is a higher consumption of nutrients, its value decreases.
- Higher HRT supposes higher performance in terms of COD removal, which also reduces the ORP values in the water outlet.
- A Higher C/N ratio results in a higher capacity for COD removal.
- A Higher C/P ratio results in a lower capacity for COD removal.
- Higher HRT increases carbon and phosphorous removal and decreases nitrogen removal.
- When the bacterial biomass activity grows, the biodegradability increases at the outlet
On the other hand, the main results achieved for wastewater streams from fruit juice industries are:
- These water samples are characterised by a greatest biodegradability which impacts all the parameters analysed.
- Great impact on pH value caused by the aerobic biofilter.
- Higher conductivity values in water outlet due to the generation of chemical species such as fatty acids and ammonia.
- The temperature increases around 2 degrees in the water outlet due to bacteriological activity.
- Higher effect of temperature due to the higher biodegradability of water samples. Higher temperature supposes higher COD removal capacity.
- Due to the high biodegradability of water samples, re is not a clear trend in carbon consumption concerning the ORP.
- The impact of C/N andC/P ratios is not significant in terms of COD removal.
In conclusion, ANAERGY is able to remove a high concentration of organics using low HRT, considering both low biodegradable water to high biodegradable water, by also eliminating high requirements of phosphorous and nitrogen ratios.
